Next to the island of Cuba itself, the Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) is the biggest in the country. It measures 2,200 square kilometres and has a population of about 90,000. Over the centuries, it served variously as a pirates' refuge and a Cuban penal colony before being transformed into a centre for Communist youth -- hence its name. It offers beautiful, remote beaches and spectacular ocean depths. It's less expensive than Cayo Largo and its residents are friendly and young at heart. Plan to spend between three and six days on Isla de la Juventud, exploring its natural attractions and its capital, Nueva Gerona.
