Istanbul’s creative spirit
Istanbul has become one of the centres of the creative world. Numerous private modern and contemporary art museums have opened over the last ten years. Creative inspiration – opera, cultural centres, literary cafés, jazz clubs – is spreading to the point that its inhabitants have nicknamed the city the New York of the East. Resolutely turned toward the future, Istanbul has been designated the European Capital of Culture 2010, making now the perfect time to discover the metropolis with its best foot forward.
For modern art lovers: Istanbul Modern
The country’s first modern art museum opened in 2004 in the disused Karaköy-Tophane warehouse on the Karaköy pier on the Bosphorus. With 8000 square metres of galleries, this clean-lined architectural space welcomes internationally renowned artists. The exhibits are often spectacular and include avant-garde installations, works by Turkish artists, and temporary shows. This “Turkish Tate Modern” is a symbol of the internationalizion of the country. Enjoy lunch on the terrace of the café-restaurant and enjoy the magnificent view of the peninsula and the sea.

For dinner with a view: 360 Istanbul
Located in Beyoğlu, the SoHo of Istanbul, this restaurant and bar is tucked into the top floor of a house on Istiklal Caddesi in Pera. The Plexiglas space, with an impressive view of the Bosphorus and Palatine Hill, sharply contrasts with the rest of the 19th century building. Its owner, architect Emir Uras, has also added an art gallery. The restaurant offers a refined mix of Eastern and Western cuisine. Diners enjoy a cozy atmosphere in winter, thanks to the greenhouse-like walls and central fireplace, and a high, sunny terrace in summer. This hip young place is an Istanbul favourite.

For contemporary art: Santralistanbul
Located in a barren industrial area in a former power plant, this gallery was created in 2007 by Bilgi University in the working-class Kagithane area. Part of the complex was used as a museum of energy, while the other part was turned into Santralistanbul. The clean-lined space overlooks the old neighbourhood that surrounds it. This interactive museum is a true imagination factory where locals relax and children take workshops on understanding contemporary art.

For a prestigious collection: Sakip Sabanci Museum
Occupying a palace dominating the shore of the Bosphorus, this recently renovated museum has organized prestigious exhibits, notably of Picasso and Rodin. A cooperation agreement with the Louvre has recently been signed. After visiting the museum, eat at the Müzedechanga restaurant in a glass cube next door. You’ll enjoy Turkish cuisine with modern touches in a seventies decor.

For a concert: Ataturk Kültür Merkesi
Originally built as an opera house, this cultural centre, opened in 1977, is a jewel of modern architecture. The building on Taksim Square, a concrete cube by day, is illuminated by thousands of lights at night. Plan to take in a concert here if for no other reason than to enjoy the modernist interior design.
