Parque Nacional Cahuita became a national monument in 1970, and then a national park in April 1978. The park was created primarily to protect the magnificent coral reef surrounding Punta Cahuita. With a total surface area of 1,067 hectares on land, and more than 600 hectares of ocean, the park encompasses a superb tropical rainforest as well as two magnificent white-sand beaches.

This coral reef is one of the largest and most fully grown in the country. There are approximately 35 coral species (some of which are about 2 m in diameter), 123 species of fish, 44 species of crustaceans, 140 species of molluscs and 128 species of seaweed.

Parque Nacional Cahuita is bordered by the Río Suarez to the north, Río Carbon to the south, and the road between Cahuita and Puerto Viejo runs along its west side. There park has two sectors. The first is called Playa Blanca and encompasses the actual village of Cahuita and its superb white-sand beach. The second sector, Puerto Vargas, is five kilometres south of the village.
