The province of Pinar del Río, which has long lagged behind the rest of the country economically, is now becoming a mecca for eco-tourism. Natural wonders lie hidden away in the hills and vales of this province, which is sculpted by the Guaniguanico mountain range. To hell with Cuba's famous beaches! Hikers and nature lovers come here, to the country's westernmost province. This region has some of the best farmlands in Cuba, and for many years its only source of wealth was its tobacco plantations. The province's agribusinesses began to thrive during the Revolution, before the present economic crisis hit. Today, the tourist industry is booming. The province is perhaps best symbolized, however, by the tobacco drying huts tucked away in its extraordinary landscapes. A large portion of the rural population still grows tobacco using traditional methods, and while ultramodern greenhouses are becoming more and more common in amongst these huts, with their roofs made of palm fronds, tractors are still rare and oxen are legion on these red lands.
