Capital of the province of Chimborazo, Riobamba is approximately 200km (124mi) from Quito and 300km (186mi) from Cuenca, located at an altitude of 2,700m (8,850ft). The annals of history record that the town was founded by Diego de Almagro in 1534. However, in 1797, a powerful earthquake entirely razed the town which was then reconstructed about 25km (15.5mi) east of its original location, now the site of Cajabamba. Riobamba enjoys a choice geographic situation surrounded by magnificent summits, including the tallest volcano in Ecuador, Chimborazo, which culminates at 6,310m (20,700ft). Other, similarly appealing summits are clustered in Parque Nacional Sangay, including the Volcán Sangay and the Volcán Altar, to the pleasure of mountaineering enthusiasts.

A stroll through the streets of Riobamba is like travelling back in time 100 years into the living memory of a town rich in colonial heritage and charm. Riobamba is also popular with tourists because it is the departure point of the train *** to Alausí.
