The three largest craters are close to each other. The first, 100 metres from the parking lot, is called Diego de la Haya in honour of one of the early 18th-century governors of Costa Rica. This crater is 690 metres wide and 80 metres deep, and has a small amount of water in its centre. The path around it consists of black volcanic earth, which makes the area resemble a lunar landscape.

Next to first crater is the immense principal crater, which is 1,050 metres in diameter and 333 metres deep. At the bottom of the crater is an emerald green lake, which shows that the volcano has been dormant for quite a while. Prior to the eruption, the volcano had a forest-covered peak - just try to imagine the incalculable force it took to explode the top of the mountain and create such a deep crater!

The third main crater is difficult to recognize. It consists of a large sandy area that begins south of the other two craters and extends west of the parking area and little reception building. It is called Playa Hermosa, or "beautiful beach".
