The Samaná Peninsula

Home » Destination Guides - Countries » Dominican Republic » The Samaná Peninsula

Rich in spellbinding and picturesque landscapes, this long peninsula covers an area of almost 1,000 square kilometres and is undeniably one of the most beautiful regions in the Dominican Republic. The area is crossed from east to west by the Cordillera de Samaná, a chain of mountains whose rounded peaks reach heights of more than 500 metres. At various points, these mountains plunge abruptly into the blue waters of the ocean or the Bahía de Samaná, adding greatly to the charm of the region. Their slopes, furthermore shelter a wonderful variety of lush vegetation.

Mountains give way to magnificent beaches of white sand, extending for kilometres in some places along the northern and southern coasts of the peninsula, and on the shores of nearby islands. In fact, such a harmonious blend of mountains and beaches, towns and villages is rarely found elsewhere in the country. The Samaná peninsula is washed to the north by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and to the south by those of the Bahía de Samaná. Its main cities are Santa Barbara de Samaná, generally known as Samaná; Sanchez, the gateway to the peninsula, and Las Terrenas, the only one of the three located on the Atlantic coast of the peninsula.
