The Southwest

The Southwest region of the Dominican Republic includes the area along the Caribbean Sea between Santo Domingo and Barahona, as well as the point of land at the western extremity of the country, where Lago Enriquillo, the Bahoruco Valley and the Bahoruco mountain range are located. This region of the country is astonishing because of the tremendous variety of its flora ranging from subtropical forest to desert. The section of highway between Baní and Barahona is over 100 kilometres long and crosses beautiful and often desolate countryside. The drier climate brings a gradual change in the vegetation; it becomes sparser and less verdant as scrub growth replaces luxuriant palm trees. Beyond Azua, huge stretches of dry earth and sandy hills dominate the landscape. The Neiba Mountain Range begins in this region, and the road becomes steeper. Before long, you wil start to spot cacti, which are plentiful in this area.

The tourism infrastructure is less developed in the South West than it is elsewhere in the country. Cerrtain towns - like Barahona for example - are beginning to promote their tourism industry, leaving some important developments to be anticipated in the future. As yet, there are no bustling resort towns like those that can found elsewhere on the island, and so far the number of deluxe hotels can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
