Founded by the Carthaginians on a small hill on the outskirts of the Llobregat Valley, the city of Barcelona developed around its Mediterranean port. Distinguishing itself from other Spanish cities, Barcelona's culture was influenced by the north rather than the south. Barcelonans make no secret of the pride they feel toward their culture and language, even if Barcelona is also known as Spain's most European city.
Barcelona is located on the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the Besòs and Llobregat rivers. Situated 180km from the French border, this city of nearly 1.6 million residents is both the capital of the province of Barcelona and of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia.
