Finding your way around
Auckland International Airport (tel. 64 9 275 0789, www.auckland-airport.co.nz) is located 21km south of the city, near Manakau Bay. It features two terminals. The Airbus offers shuttle service between the airport and downtown Auckland. Major car rental companies such as Avis, Hertz and Budget all have outlets at the airport, and taxis are available at both terminals to take visitors into town.
New Zealand's excellent network of roads makes driving an easy and efficient way to visit Auckland and the rest of the country. Note that certain car rental agencies offer rental plans that let visitors rent a different car on each of the area's islands, a perfect choice for those who wish to visit both the North and South islands without having to pay the rather costly car ferry fee.
There are several taxi companies in Auckland, such as Auckland Co-op Taxis (tel. 300 3000). All taxis display their rates and are equipped with meters. Note that night-time rates may vary.
Auckland's railway network remains undeveloped and rather expensive. However, we do recommend you take the Overlander (www.tranzscenic.co.nz) panoramic train that leads through breathtakingly beautiful landscapes.
A ferry links the North and South islands and provides a magnificent view of the area.
