San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, is a major port for the many ships that sail around the Caribbean. Able to accommodate several cruise ships at one time, San Juan's harbour is one of the largest in the world. Every year, more than a million passengers come ashore here to spend the day exploring the old, walled city.

The port of San Juan is equipped with enormous piers for receiving cruise ships. Pier 1, with its ultramodern, two-story terminal that includes walkways, luggage conveyors, elevators, a parking lot and shops, is the closest to Old San Juan, which is only a short walk away. Pier 4 and the Pan American Pier are also connected to modern terminals. Pier 6 is the furthest away from the old town.
