Finding your way around
San Francisco International Airport is located some 22km from downtown (tel. 650-821-8211, www.flysfo.com). The American Airporter Shuttle (www.americanairporter.com) links the airport to the city's tourist areas.
By Public Transportation
Public transportation in San Francisco is well developed, quite efficient and rather economical. The San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) (tel. 311, www.sfmta.com) serves San Francisco and its suburbs and features some 80 bus lines, the subway, and the city's famous cable cars. The most popular cable car line with tourists leaves from the corner of Market and Powell streets.
Travelling by car is not really an efficient or pleasant way to visit San Francisco. Unless you are travelling outside the city, renting a car is thus not recommended. However, the overall good maintenance of California's roads makes the car an ideal means to visit San Francisco's surroundings. You will have no trouble finding excellent road maps in the city's travel bookstores or gas stations.
Golden Gate Ferry (corner of Market St. and Embarcadero, tel. 415-455-2000, www.goldengateferry.org) offers several different ferries that can be used to explore the bay or to get to Alcatraz or Sausalito. This is also a good way to get a nice view of the fog as it spreads over the city.
