Finding your way around
Dubai International Airport (tel. 04-216-2525, www.dubaiairport.com) lies about 5km southeast of the city. To reach Dubai, flat-rate taxis are available 24hrs a day. A bus also provides shuttle service to the city centre every 10min. And, if you'd like to get into the luxurious Dubai mindset right from the get-go, you can also hire a limousine at the arrivals terminal...
Most taxis in Dubai use meters, but you can usually negotiate a fare with those that aren't equipped with them, although this is increasingly rare. Cabs with fixed rates can also be good if you're unsure about prices. If you are planning on making trips outside the city, it is also possible to hire a taxi for a period of twelve hours at a set price.
The municipal transit system in Dubai is very effective. Buses circulate frequently and destinations are written in English as well as Arabic.
Dubai has an excellent network of roads, and motorists drive on the right-hand side. Cars can be rented through agencies upon presentation of a valid international driver's licence and a passport.
By Water Taxi
If you are heading from Bur Dubai to Deira, taking a water taxi or abra across the Creek is a fun (and inexpensive) option.
