Parks & beaches
Parque Lenin (at the corner of Calle 100 and Cortina de la Presa), located 25km outside the city, is a gigantic leisure centre. Built in 1972, it covers 750ha and includes a riding club, an amusement park, a sports complex, art galleries and an aquarium. Nothing has been left out at this giant playground, which used to be very popular with local residents. The nearby Jardín Botanico (Km 3.5 of Carretera del Rosario) covers an area of 600ha and will appeal to those who appreciate wide open spaces and beautiful flora.
Cuba's eastern beaches can be found some 15km outside Havana. The most inviting is undoubtedly Santa Maria, an expanse of white sand that is every bit as lovely as the beaches of Varadero, though not as pristine. The beaches of Boca Ciega, the neighbouring village to the east, are also very attractive and often overlooked by tourists.
