Guatemala's average annual temperature is 20 ºC, making the climate of the country very pleasant, mostly due to its altitude. In the regions that are 1,300 to 1,600m above sea level, including the capital, Antigua, Lago de Atitlán, Chichicastenango and Cobán, the air is pleasant during the day and relatively cool at night, all year round. Despite the intense heat, humidity is not too high. Humidity and extreme heat are more characteristic of the Petén lowlands and the coasts. The rainy season, from April until December, makes roads muddy and driving impossible, especially in the Petén. In the coastal regions, the temperature can reach 37 ºC, and in the highest mountains, there can be frost sometimes at night. In the high plateaus in the middle of the country, rainy season lasts from May until October, and the sky is always cloudy before and after the heavy showers that fall mainly during the afternoon and the evening.
