Hawaii |
Hawaii is known the world over for its trade winds, sunshine and blue skies, but depending on the time of year, the island, slopes, altitude and conditions can vary drastically. Hawaii has two main seasons: winter, which is cooler (77°F or 25°C on average) with frequent and extensive rain; and summer, which is warmer (86°F or 30°C) and sunnier, cooled by the trade winds blowing from the northeast. In winter, the trade winds are replaced by kona winds from the southeast, which bring hot temperatures and bad weather.
The islands’ orientation and relative location have significant consequences. Subject to dominant trade winds that bring rain, the north and east littorals are more humid. The west and south coasts, however, are “under the wind” and drier, which explains why all seaside resorts are located here. In fact, because of this phenomenon, five times as much rain can fall just a few kilometres away.
