Honduras |
Honduras has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. As in any country, temperatures are highest at low altitudes and more moderate at the higher elevations. Coastal areas are often cooled by sea breezes. Tegucigalpa, situated at an altitude of about 950m, has a pleasant climate year-round with warm temperatures but rarely extreme. San Pedro Sula lies near sea level and away from the coast, making for higher average temperatures. There is only a small variation in temperature from one month to the next. December and January are the coolest months, April and May the hottest.
Rainfall patterns differ enormously by region. In most of central and southern Honduras, there are two seasons, a dry season running from November to April and a rainy season (often called invierno, meaning winter) from May to October, with a transitional period of several weeks at each end. Even during the rainy season there are many dry days, and it is often sunny in the morning. The rains are frequently concentrated between the mid-afternoon and early evening hours, often taking the form of brief but intense showers.
Along the Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands, as well as in much of the Mosquitia, it rains throughout the year, with October and November being the rainiest months. But it rarely rains all day, nor does it rain every day. Even during the wettest season there are long periods of sunshine, although mosquitos and sandflies tend to be more abundant.
