The average temperature in Martinique is around 26°C (78.8°F) The heat is never oppressive, it is tempered by the steady, refreshing alizés, or trade winds, from the east and northeast. The most popular tourist period is approximately from December to May, when the temperature is pleasantly mild. This is known as the carême, or dry season, as opposed to the rainy season which lasts from June to November.
The rainy season, though marked by heavy downpours, is the hottest time of the year, with an average temperature of 30°C (86°F). Oddly, this season is also known as the hivernage (wintering). The hurricane risk is much higher during this period, especially in August and September. Fortunately, these storms are rare, but the extensive damage caused by hurricane David in August 1979 and hurricane Klaus in October 1990 is proof of their devastating force.
Swimming in the ocean is possible year-round in Martinique, as the water temperature (27°C or 80.6°F on average) fluctuates only two or three degrees from season to season.
