Nicaragua can be divided into four climatic zones. The Pacific zone, which stretches to the eastern edges of the two large lakes, Lago de Managua and Lago de Nicaragua, is a dry tropical area, with high temperatures and relatively little precipitation. The subtropical zone in the centre of the country, where the altitude causes slightly cooler temperatures, is divided into humid areas to the west and dry areas more in the east. Finally, the low-land Atlantic region is humid and tropical, and the high precipitation and temperature are perfect for a flourishing tropical rainforest.

As in any tropical country, Nicaragua has a dry season and a rainy season, though they vary from region to region. In the western part of the country, the dry season, also called verano or summer by the locals, runs roughly from November to April. Invierno, or the winter rainy season, lasts the other half of the year, from May to October. For travelling in the west of the country, the dry season is preferable: even though daily showers during the rainy season may only last an hour, the sky is often cloudy, taking away from the spectacular views of volcanoes and blue sky. In the eastern part of the country, the rainy season lasts virtually all year long, and the showers tend to be much heavier.

The temperature in Nicaragua varies little from season to season, though the heat during the rainy season can be uncomfortable. Generally speaking, expect a range of between 27°C and 32 °C (81-90 F) during the rainy season, and between 30 °C and 35 °C (86-95 F) throughout the dry period. At higher altitudes, both nights and days can be considerably cooler.
